Scanning the future through the eyes of 20 industry leaders.

To mark Ennis & Co’s 15th birthday as an automotive executive search company, we asked 20 of the sector’s most influential and thoughtful leaders and experts to predict what the global industry will look like in 15 years’ time.

We did this by asking two key questions in a series of face-to-face interviews:

  • What will the automotive and mobility industry look like by 2040?
  • What kind of leadership will be required to lead through the changes that are coming?

Our experts, including leaders up to CEO, Board and Chair level, were chosen for their insights across a range of verticals within the automotive sector: OEM, national sales company, retail, supply chain and R&D funding.

The result is a fascinating report, Vision 2040, that examines the changes that lie in store for the industry curated into 10 main themes: China; Globalisation; Technology; Energy; Infrastructure; Sustainability; Brand, Everyday Use v Luxury; Customer Experience; and Consolidation.

On the broader subject of leadership, the report also looks at the qualities required by leaders to manage change and the importance of identifying and developing future leaders.

While we cannot know for certain how the industry will evolve, this report provides a window into what industry leaders are thinking to provide some context for your own strategic planning.

Looking into the future, are OEMs going to introduce a brand-new vehicle every seven years? Probably not. They’ll update through software…

Global Managing Director, Range Rover, JLR

I don’t want to hear managers telling me about their weekends, or their yoga session, or their work-life balance. In a moment of crisis, when there is a storm coming, I want intellectual gravitas and I want leaders to show that they are strong and they can lead.
